Fed: Mining sector axes 1,100 jobs

Australia's resources sector yesterday axed a combined 11-hundred jobs in one day ..

as the Reserve Bank warned of weakening labour demand.

Mining giant Rio Tinto blames falling aluminium prices for its decision to retrench
705 workers in Queensland.

West Australian sands miner Iluka says weak demand made it axe 135 jobs .. while mining
equipment maker Caterpillar is preparing to cut 280 jobs from its 700-strong Tasmanian
workforce by the end of April.

Australia's job losses tally in the first three months of the year has now climbed
to 10-thousand .. with the once-thriving mining sector responsible for a large chunk of
the cuts.
