Brazil police kill 6 in Rio de Janeiro shootout

Police killed six alleged drug gang members in a shootout Friday on Rio de Janeiro's poor north side, and a bodyguard for the state security chief was shot dead in an apparent robbery gone awry.

The six were killed after drug gang members opened fire on police who were following them in an effort to impede an invasion of a shantytown controlled by rivals, said a Rio de Janeiro state police officer who declined to be identified in accordance with department policy.

The alleged gang members were traveling in two cars, one of which managed to escape, the officer said.
