Vic: Nixon proposes safe drivers be rewarded
MELBOURNE, April 20 AAP - Victorian Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon has proposedawarding motorists bonus points for good driving as part of a plan to reduce the roadtoll.
Ms Nixon told The Age that under the plan, which aimed to cut the road toll by 20 percent over the next five years, motorists would be given extra points on their licencesfor completing set periods without breaking road rules.
"We would give them some credit for not having accidents or fines," Ms Nixon said.
The Ministerial Road Council will reportedly discuss the idea.
On the eve of her first anniversary as Australia's first female police commissioner,Ms Nixon is set to launch a police reform package designed to set the direction for theforce for the next decade.
Proposed initiatives reportedly include state-wide blitzes on car thefts and home burglaries;a new approach to dealing with family violence and sexual assaults; a new internal disciplinesystem and drug and alcohol testing for police.
