FED: Opposition renews tax credit calls following wage rise
The federal opposition has renewed calls for the government to consider a system of tax
credits following a $12 weekly pay rise for low paid workers.
Two million Australian workers were granted the rise by the Australian Industrial Relations
Commission yesterday.
But some economists say the workers may only end up with only about $1.50 in the hand - not
even enough to buy a meat pie.
Labor Senator STEPHEN CONROY says he is disappointed Workplace Relations Minister PETER
REITH has ruled out tax credits.
And Australian Democrats finance spokesman ANDREW MURRAY says his party wants to move
income tax cuts down from the very rich to the poor.
