Fed: Campaign launched to halve child poverty by 2008

Anglicans nationwide are mobilising to break the cycle of poverty, with aims to halvethe number of destitute children within five years.

The latest figures show 860,000 Australian children live in households where neitherparent works.

These children are more likely to become parents at a young age, leave school earlyand depend on government support.

Anglicare Australia today launched a national campaign to fight bipartisan policiesit argues could trap up to 750,000 children in life-long poverty.

The social justice organisation is urging all Australians to write to the prime minister,the federal children's minister and their local MP.

Children's Minister LARRY ANTHONY says poor outcomes are often the result of multipledisadvantages including low education, health issues and poor economic participation.

Labor's family spokesman WAYNE SWAN and children's spokeswoman JACINTA COLLINS arecalling on the government to set a benchmark to reduce child poverty.

A Senate inquiry is looking into poverty and financial hardship.
